How to use it
Choose the instrument (piano, guitar or bass), the root and the scale. The keyboard or the neck marks the notes, and below you'll find the formula, the degrees, the chords of the scale, how it sounds and the scales that share the same notes. Tap a note to hear it and hold it (or Shift + click) to make it the root. On guitar and bass, choose the tuning and the position.
Shortcuts: ← → root · ↑ ↓ scale · / search · space listen · D drone · J jam · F full screen · Esc exit.
Play with the band (Jam)
The Jam button plays a band of recorded instruments (grand piano, upright bass and drums; electric piano is an option) on a progression chosen for the scale, so you can improvise over it. The notes of the chord being played light up on the instrument. You can pick the progression, the style and the tempo, take an instrument out of the band, practice call and response, or have the tempo speed up little by little.
While you record or play
Floating window opens a small window that stays on top of any other app, including your DAW. Stage mode leaves just the instrument, big — great for a tablet next to your instrument. Keep the screen on stops your phone or iPad from locking.
On your phone
From the browser, "Add to Home Screen" opens it full screen, like an app, and it works offline with what you've already visited.
Sound credits
The Jam band plays recorded instruments from free libraries: the grand piano (Steinway B), vibraphone, hi-hat and shaker come from Versilian Studios VCSL and the upright bass from Versilian Studios VSCO 2 Community Edition, both public domain (CC0). The drums are the Salamander Drumkit by Alexander Holm, licensed CC BY-SA 3.0: the drum files the site uses (trimmed and compressed) are shared under the same license.
